SURROGATE: MOTHER TO MYSELF
Redwood, 600 feet of cotton lead line rope, brass, steel.
65 x 54 x 18 IN | 165 x 137 x 4.5 CM
"Mother to Myself" is taken from the title of Pamela Djerassi's book of poetry published after her suicide.
"Surrogate" holds energy that would otherwise be carried by another person(s) or place. The installation acts as a material body available for the transference of tension extant in the history of a site or between people. The Surrogate series reminds us how tension binds us together or binds us to a site even as we sometimes lean away - in choice, opinion, story or memory.
